Senator Emmanuel “Manny” Pacquiao proposed to increase the hazard pay of Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) personnel by more than 1000%. Through Senate Bill No. 970, the senator pushed for an increase to as much as Php 20,000.

At present, AFP personnel only get Php 540 as monthly hazard pay. According to Pacquiao, personnel of AFP are the country’s frontlines in dealing with apprehensions in the borders and tensions with terrorist and extremist groups.

“The AFP defends our country despite the exposure to danger and possibly risking their lives,” Pacquaio said in his speech introducing the bill. He also added “It’s only appropriate to compensate those who risk their lives to serve and protect our country.”

Uniformed and civilian doctors and nurses who serve in the AFP Medical Center assigned to conflict areas are also covered by the bill.

Pacquaio, who enlisted as an Army reserve in 2006 as a sergeant, was promoted to the rank of colonel in 2017.

Funding of the said bill would come from the General Appropriations Act.
