Binay urges Lower House to not sit on ABS-CBN franchise renewal

According to Binay, the issues raised in the petition against ABS-CBN can be cured through proper amendments. Binay also believes that these allegations of abuse as well as other violations by the network would be best addressed in legislative hearings.

ABS-CBN, Philippines' leading broadcast network, may have its license nullified due to a quo warranto petition filed by Solicitor General Jose Calida, who lodged a complaint with the Supreme Court on February 10, 2020, accusing the network and its subsidiary of violating laws on foreign ownership and illegal operations beyond its legislative franchise.

Senator Nancy Binay believes that franchise issues must be dealt and discussed in legislative hearings. Binay stressed that legislators are the one in-charge to sit on the franchise's approval, as it is their job to evaluate the merits of granting or refusing franchise applications.

"I'm not comfortable sa idea na ila-lapse na lang ang pag-expire ng franchise nang hindi dumaan sa proseso. Parang ang dating is we're not doing our job," Binay expressed.

Despite the "unfriendly" network coverage of ABS-CBN towards the Binays, Senator Nancy said that when the approved bill has been transmitted from the House of Representative to Senate, she will support the network's franchise and vote for its approval. When asked why, she said that her vote "is not about me."

Apart from this, she emphasized that freedom of information is largely at risk once this petition to shut down the network prospers.

"Naiintindihan ko din naman iyong mga reklamo against ABS-CBN but mas mahalaga iyong freedom to information, access to information. I think kapag nawala itong ABS [CBN], malaking dagok iyon sa access natin to information," Binay pointed out.
