Following the decision of the House of Representatives to deny ABS-CBN a congressional franchise, Senator Grace Poe called for the strengthening of the institution and the importance of media in society.
Senator Grace Poe highlighted the importance of media in the fearless reporting in news in the country. The Senator further underscored that a vigilant public and a free and fair media is what the country truly needs.
“Dapat bang matakot ang media? Sana huwag dahil importante talaga ang trabaho ng media para mailahad ang nangyayari, at ang taumbayan ang mismong magdesisyon kung ito ba ay patas o hindi," Sen. Poe said.
She also said that a strong media and strong accountability in this country could make lawmakers be more cautious on their actions.
"We really have to strengthen our institutions and with that media should also be strengthened. If we have a strong media and strong accountability in this country, I think that lawmakers will be very cautious to do the right thing," she added.
Commenting on the recent decision by the House panel on the ABS-CBN franchise, she questioned the decision despite the pronouncements made by resource persons such as the DOJ supporting the case of the media company.
“In the case of the Lower House, although they have the authority to cancel or grant a franchise, there should be parameters; it should not be based on their whim or maybe just their personal view,” she said.
