Comelec expects 5 million more voters to register for 2017 barangay and SK polls

The postponement of the barangay and SK elections will give more time to those who missed the registration deadline.

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is expecting five million voters to register during the registration process for the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections next year. In a statement, Comelec Chairman Juan Andres Bautista said that following the postponement of this year’s Barangay and SK elections, they are looking at an additional voters for the village and youth polls in October 2017.
The Comelec Chair said that “It was estimated that there will be three million voters for the barangay and additional two million for SK or those aged 15 to 17 come election day.”

With this, the poll body chief also admitted that they were just waiting for Congress to pass the law postponing the forthcoming polls before they release their registration schedule, adding that Comelec has already prepared a schedule and resolution for this matter.

Bautista also acknowledged that it was a welcome development for them, that both the House of Representatives and Senate are fast tracking the passage of the bill to postpone the scheduled polls next month.

Bautista also said that as soon as the proposal to postpone the barangay at SK elections has been passed into law, Comelec will immediately release an updated schedule for the registration to accommodate those who would want to vote in the October 2017 elections.
Speaking as a resource person during a House of Representatives bill hearing on the proposal, Bautista said the postponement will give more time to those who failed to register for the elections.

Comelec plans to start the registration in October and will run until April 2017. The Office of Election Officer (OEC) will be open Monday to Saturday during office hours.

Aside from the regular registration centers in the city and municipality all over the country, Bautista added that they are also planning to open satellite registration.

Around 85 million voters have already signed up for the barangay and SK elections originally set on October 31 of this year.
