To give more meaning to the June 12 Independence Day celebrations, Cagayan Rep. Jack Enrile urged the government to go back to the basics and focus on the most fundamental problems facing the country today.
Enrile said that while our forefathers have earned us our freedom from Spanish subjugators in 1898, the Filipino's sovereignty continues to be challenged to this day. He cited threats to the family as a core unit of society, and similar challenges to food security, quality of education, and housing. "The best way to get back on track is to go back to the basics. With so many problems and challenges, many of our leaders often get distracted with what needs to be prioritized. To the ordinary Filipino, it's really about having a solid and healthy family, enough food on the table, good education and a roof over their heads," Enrile said."Where do we go from here will depend on how well we will learn from the lessons of the past and use this wisdom to address the problems that we are facing now."
In the same breath, Enrile said ordinary Filipinos should also realize the importance of the role that citizens play in governance, saying individuals and civil society groups need be more involved in activities and projects undertaken in their barangays, towns, and provinces.
He noted that there are numerous avenues and opportunities already in place for ordinary citizens to be involved in governance.
"The revolution was not just about Jose Rizal and Andres Bonifacio, but more about every Juan dela Cruz who shed sweat, tears and blood in the fight against the oppressors," Enrile said.
"Let's go back to the core values that earned us our freedom and use these to make the foundations of our sovereignty stronger and more stable - values such as bayanihan, sacrifice, and hardwork.
