SAGIP Rep. Erlinda M. Santiago seeks to abolish political dynasties in HB 837 or the Anti-Political Dynasty Act. Rep. Santiago said that the political clannish framework of the Philippines continues to reign and disregards Article II, Sec. 26 of the 1987 Philippine Constitution: “The State shall guarantee equal access to public service and prohibit political dynasty as may be defined by law”.

On CORRUPTION - The one issue that is right now, and always, in our people's minds in corruption, and of course the issue's tipping point, the Janet Lim Napoles scandal. Whatever the real numbers are --- ten billion, perhaps less, perhaps more? --- we cannot and must not sweep away this scam into oblivion. We cannot allow this. For this reason, let me put this on public notice: the Minority is filling a resolution to investigate this criminal plunder --- for that is what it is --- that us destroying the trust that our legislative should enjoy from our people.

Currently, the NTC supervises and regulates Radio and TV Broadcast Stations, Cable TV, and Pay Television, as well as public communications services including the management of the radio spectrum. The Bill will greatly expand NTC’s jurisdiction into “other multi-media infrastructure and services” as well as over “program, content, and application providers in such infrastructure and services.”

One of the earlier bills filed in the 16th Congress is the Magna Carta for Internet Freedom or MCIF, filed by strong women advocates in the House of Representatives by Rep. Kim Cojuangco (NPC-1st Dist, Pangasinan) and firebrand Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago in the Senate.

In what appears to be a step towards the nuclear option in the country, Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago filed Senate Bill No. 580 mandating an immediate validation process of the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant to determine its operability pursuant to internationally accepted nuclear power industry norms.

Sen. Grace Poe filed her first bill in the Senate last 1 July, the start of the 16th Congress.  Calling for free lunch for Filipino children in public schools program, Poe stated that her bill is anchored against hunger and malnutrition, the greatest threats to public health.
