President Benigno Aquino III will be delivering his 5th State of the Nation Address in the midst of his lowest approval ratings to date as reported by survey firms Pulse Asia and Social Weather Stations. Other branches of government have received lower public approval at the beginning of 2014 as well. How will they fare in the coming months with the development of various issues such as the Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP) and the "pork barrel scam" investigations?

Mindanao representatives, Rufus and Maximo Rodriguez, pushed for HB 1213, a similar measure filed in the previous Congress prescribing a harsher penalty for foreign drug traffickers.   This measure seeks to amend R.A. 9165 or the “Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002” by adopting the higher prescribed penalty, including death, of the national law of a foreign drug trafficker, to diminish its prevalence thereby limiting the establishment of foreign drug cartels in the Philippines.

The House Committee on Suffrage and Electoral Reform approved HB 3587, a consolidation of three Anti-Political Dynasty measures namely; HB 172 filed by Reps. Neri Colmenares (BAYAN MUNA), Carlos Zarate, Luzviminda Ilagan (GABRIELA), Emmi De Jesus (GABRIELA), Antonio Tinio (ACT TEACHERS), Fernando Hicap (ANAKPAWIS), Terry Ridon (KABATAAN) and Edgar Erice, HB 837 by Rep. Erlinda M. Santiago (SAGIP) and HB 2911 by Rep. Oscar Rodriguez, all seeking to carry out the Constitutional mandate against political dynasty in order to guarantee equal access to public service.
