Dead IslandClear summer sky, white sand beaches, classy hotels and all-night parties…The ideal tropical holiday get-away. Now, who wouldn’t want to be locked in at such a paradise?...Except the island turns out to be inhabited by brain-munching cannibals!

“Dead Island”pushes the envelope in morbid and gruesome adventures.  The game is set in a tropical island that initiallydepicts itself as the perfect summer hideaway. Complete with the amenities of top-class hotels, smooth dance floors, and glib DJs, it would seem that the experience is a perfect fantasy. But in some quirk of fate, the same dream suddenly turns into a nightmare as your fellow tourists suddenly turn into cannibals.

Victims instantly turn into zombies once they are bitten. Mass hysteria ensues, and it is up to the player to figure out what is wrong and what had been causing the maladies while trying to get-off the island. The player gets into the experience by choosing one of the four unique characters each immune to zombification. Sounds like a typical zombie game, right? Wrong.

Though it would have similarities to older zombie titles that touched our hearts such as Left 4 Dead and Dead Rising, Dead Island is different and unique in its own right. It has the elements of a hardcore shooter and first-person RPG (role playing game) molded together. Although it is played in a first person perspective, the Dead Island is more melee-weapon concentrated, rather than the normal firearm vs. zombie genre.

This is of the game’s unique points as it makes the game more close and personal, rather than having to shoot down zombies from afar at a safe place. On the other hand, it’s an RPG in a sense that players level-up as they kill zombies and finish quests.

Dead Island’s strong point is in this system, aside from giving player’s quests to follow, it also gives them the chance to roam freely and explore the game’s ruined landscapes. To either level-up or loot some finds for better chances of survival. The freedom Dead Island offers makes the game a more authentic and realistic zombie apocalypse.

Defending against hordes of zombies is never a job for just one person only. That is why players can play the game in coop with up to 4 players. It also enables players to drop-in and out of on-going online games. Players can progress the storyline even during offline mode.

Though the online experience can be a bit troublesome as the game is riddled with a lot of bugs, the multiplayer action is nonetheless fun and exciting. Having to slash your way through heaps of zombies is satisfying, but to have your friends do it with you? Now that’s fun.

Graphically, Dead Island is a bit on the mid-level scale. It utilizes Techland’s very own Chrome Engine 5, also used in Call of Juarez: the Cartel. But even on its present scale, the game still is surprisingly sharp even with mobs of zombies coming right at you.- Article courtesy of Manila Bulletin.
