Android powered smartphoneOn the rise these days would be the influx of new Android-powered smartphones. Leading phone brands that include the likes of HTC and Motorola have taken the world by storm, offering advanced features that were made to satisfy the rants of most mobile phone geek the world has today.

Tablets and smartphones are all the craze and from the looks of it, they have become things that a person would feel empty without. However, there are the fine prints included before buying any of them, the operating system updates of which is critical.

Perhaps you have stumbled upon news and blogs about updates being rolled out by certain carriers abroad. Why is this so? Well, the updates help improve and address the needed bugs and fixes that these phones are expected to have. Further, new perks like accommodating advanced apps are included as well like newer versions of software like Adobe Flash.

Unlike in the United States or Europe, the Philippines has yet to be included for customers waiting on Android OS updates. To date, the latest is the Android 3.0 Honeycomb used on tablets and some phones. Local consumers who lack the techie knowledge and following have yet to realize the value of Android operating systems but you can expect all that to change soon.

The updates are somewhat similar to the usual patches we have experienced on the Windows PC operating system. Though not as rampant as the time of the Windows 98 and Windows XP era, this should somehow give you an inkling of why updates are important now for the Android handset owners. They practically cater to the same thing.

As standard desktop operating systems, mobile phones and devices are not 100% perfect. They will churn out the bugs and offer some problems in the long run.

One practice in the states would be to turn to ROMS. These are apps developed by app developers to try and come up with a modified way to address smartphone needs. But of course, there is a risk. Being unofficial, these ROMS can cause problems for your phone or worse, “brick” your phone.

Finally, the smartphone preference is key. A lot of the Android-powered smartphones have had limitations as far as getting Android updates is concerned. This is one aspect that is pretty hard to single out, even for the genius techie. The only thing you can do is to ask the retailer or the manufacturer if the handset comes with provisions for future Android updates.

Some smartphones find themselves stuck on current Android OS versions although occasionally, there would be surprise OS versions that would crop up. It may take some time for these rare releases to come out but by all means, the OS update versions should be critical when you plan to buy an Android smartphone in the market.

Android-powered phones are already being sold in the market but to date, all the rave points to the Apple devices like the iPad and the iPhone. Just like abroad, expect the Android devices to take the Philippines by storm. And once you do, be open to the Android OS update possibilities before making the final decision on the right Android-powered smartphone or tablet to buy. - Article courtesy of Manila Bulletin
