I was looking for a good pair of headphones so that I can listen to some pump-up tunes during workouts when my editor unexpectedly asked me to review the Sennheiser HD 220 by Adidas Originals. I am a long-time fan of these two brands so I was excited to find out what would happen if they combined.
At first glance, the HD 220 proudly screamed with style. Looking retro hip in bright blue and white, this head turner is for the confident fashionista in you. It is definitely not for the shy type. With the Sennheiser and Adidas logos printed on the headband and ear cups, respectively, it will surely get you noticed whether you are in a mall or on the street.
I took it for a 1-hour run and I was surprised at how light it was. At first, I didn’t like the HD 220’s predominantly plastic build. But I quickly changed my mind when I realized that because of this and the foam paddings on the band and ear cups, the HD 220 was one of the most comfortable headphones I have ever used.
Wifey says that I have small ears and a big head because I don’t listen to her but the extendable headband and the adjustable ear cups made sure that they fit snugly no matter how big my head is.
In spite of its plastic body, I found the HD 220 more durable than those popular foldable Skullcandy headphones (I have broken a couple already just by trying to put them on and the warranty does not cover that). The single-sided cable design was perfect for me because it allowed my head more freedom of movement while the 3.5mm stereo plug made it compatible with most laptops and portable music players.
The box says that the HD 220 is equipped with “neodymium magnets for powerful, bass-driven stereo sound”. Pretty big words but I think they mean that sound quality on the HD 220 is great. I am not an audiophile but I was able to hear the high, mid, and low ranges very well.
The thick on-ear foam padding was great at blocking-out background noise. However, it also compromised the depth of the bass. You still need to press the ear cups against your ears to hear the HD 220’s actual sound quality.
While it may be a deal-breaker for some, I still think it is several notches better than most of the P2,000 and below headphones that I have tried (including the popular Skullcandy headphones).
Overall, the Sennheiser HD 220 by Adidas Originals is a great combination of sound and street-style. If you are into gadgets that performs well and looks even better, then this one is for you. - Article courtesy of Manila Bulletin.
