Let's cook crisps

If you want to find a way to make nutrition part of your lifestyle and at the same time add some enjoyment, you have got to learn about my newest find.

My six-year-old son first told me about this item last October or November because he’d been seeing the advertisements on Cartoon Network, and he kept asking if we could get one for him because he wanted to be able to make “crisps” at home.  I couldn’t quite understand what he was talking about until I caught the commercial myself and was thoroughly intrigued!  The whole point of this fun contraption is to make potato and other kinds of chips that taste great without the fat and the difficulty.  That – and the fact that a batch could be made in just minutes – sold me.

The set consists of a safety holder for the potato or other veggie or fruit.  The potato is then slid across a mandoline slicer, creating uniform, extremely thin slivers that collect underneath the slicer in a detachable bowl.  You then mount the slices on a lightweight carousel rack which can take up to a couple of dozen pieces and pop it in the microwave as is, no need for oil or salt, for about three to four minutes depending on how crisp you like chips.  Every time we make them, we have to make several batches because everyone in our home loves them!

I found out via research (you know me and my research!) that you can get the attractive, advertised one called the “Let’s Cook Crisp Maker” in toy stores for around P1,100.  It looks quite safe as the potato is housed in a completely covered little compartment so no worries for little fingers.  I also found a more compact, simple version on eBay.  The seller is stationed in Hong Kong so there’s a shipping fee involved, but the total of each set, with shipping is approximately P350 only.  The grip for the potato on the smaller version is not enclosed, as it is on the more expensive version, but if you can get someone to assist your child, then slicing the potato should be easy.  At least you have the option, and either way you come out with a healthy, and fun snack maker.

Aside from potato crisps, you can also try yams, carrots, apples (my best friend sprinkles cinnamon and Splenda over apples before they go into the microwave).  If you’re feeling adventurous, you can try gabi and squash.  In case you’re worried about online fraud, the seller I got mine from was perfectly safe, if you want me to share her seller name, SMS me 09179613765 or 09177529404. - Article courtesy of Manila Bulletin
