For free spirits and the wholesomely flirty

Folded and Hung captures the spirit of freedom of expression

An annual festival in Indio, California, the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Fest served as Folded and Hung’s main inspiration for its Philippine Fashion Week Spring-Summer 2011 contribution, along with sister brand Jellybean. With a well-lit atmosphere, the stage was set to look like a grass field amidst a warm, sunny, California-style day. Overall, it was about youthful self-expression with fashion as medium, done the classic, Americana way.

The show started with a trio singing American pop songs. During the songs, models showcase Jellybean’s series of soft, lacy, playful, Lolita-inspired clothes for the bright, young, and glamorous, rendered in candy colors and sweet patterns such as stripes, florals, and a few patchworks thrown in between, among others.  In general, Jellybean utilized lace and tulle in pale tones of nude, cream, and blush, upped with a punch of multi-layered skirts, lacy bloomers and stockings, and cropped bodices. A mix of florals and psychedelic print patterns in separate pieces brought freshness and youth to the collection. Accessories, like pearl and chain necklaces, along with cameo rings, large, bejeweled bibs, and stacked gold bangles complemented the ensembles.

Party dresses in lace and mesh “show off Jellybean’s flirty, dressed-up style.” A look into the youthful yet wholesomely flirty pieces of Jellybean’s current collection easily brings into mind, for us, the novel Lolita, by Vladimir Nabokov. With semblances of American culture that the book and the clothes share, Jellybean’s point of view might be in synch with what Dolores Haze may opt to wear, should Lolita be restaged in the nearest future, to the disdain of the conservative Mr. Humbert.

Meanwhile, Folded and Hung’s 2011 Summer Collection had a casual mix of hippie, ethnic, gypsy, grunge and vintage elements in a contemporary manner — celebrating freedom of expression (aiming to capture the free spirit Americans are usually known for), by declaring the summer season open with the 2011 Streetcast Fashion Show of the recent cast of models the brand has recruited to keep its youthful vibe on track.

Women’s clothing were mostly hippie done Generation Y-appropriate. Vintage-inspired, long dresses, tunics in light fabrics along with lace-tiered skirts, are just some of the recognizable pieces for the show. Florals and colorful prints were also present, together with loose-fitting jumpers and dresses cinched with belts to define a woman’s form comfortably. There were also black dresses and swimwear. Denim shorts and sunglasses in various styles such as aviators are also projected to be hot items for summer along with accessories such as bags and knotted head pieces that sport floral prints.

Resort shirts, soft cargos, Henley tees, dhoti shorts and relaxed denim were some of the items for menswear, defined by the brand as “free flowing.” There were also biker-inspired pieces such as graphic tees and patchwork woven tops that can be partnered with printed shorts, denim slouch slim jeans, faded, retro, denim shorts, and drop crotch sweatpants.

While black pieces are hard to ignore, Folded and Hung highlights more a lively color palette inspired by nature. Colors such as green, blue, red, orange, and neutral tones gave “a delicious flavor” to the clothes.
