The untimely demise of former President Benigno Aquino III (“PNoy”) has prompted me to reflect on my years in politics dating back to 2009. To clarify, I never had any professional or personal relationship with the former President, but I always had an affinity for the kind of political environment there was prior to the 2010 National Elections.

It sounds so typical nowadays to hear of personalities, groups and parties positioning themselves for the upcoming 2022 National Elections. There have been several political backroom operations wherein small parties have either coalesced or entered into partnership agreements with bigger political parties or groups. 12 June 2021 marked the 123rd celebration of Philippine Independence Day. The roots of this celebration can be traced to the time when former President Emilio Aguinaldo issued a 21-page decree entitled "Acta de la Proclamacion de la Independencia del Pueblo Filipino," following the claim of victory by the Filipino American troops against Spanish forces in the Battle of Manila on May 1898. Defunding the task force is a knee-jerk reaction to the red-tagging issue of community pantries. It defeats the purpose of the Bayanihan spirit being promoted by community pantries. Instead of sowing further divide, leaders of the Armed Forces should call out its own Gen. Parlade for his uncivilized remarks against Community Pantry Initiator Ana Patricia Non.

No pandemic can prevent Presidential and Vice-Presidential aspirants from expressing their interest to run for public office. However, the contributions and actions of these aspirants during this pandemic will weigh heavily on the public's perception whether they are worthy to be elected as the next leaders of our country.
