It is sad that despite the many ills that plague our country today, our president and the House are only concerned with preserving their power and enriching their greed.
The President and members of the Lower are exploiting our people’s apathy and disillusionment due to the distrust and hypocrisy of the opposition.
How can the opposition rally for genuine change when they defer their leadership to an ex-president who was found guilty of corruption?
I urge our reform-minded leaders and civil societies to find a leader who is unblemished and not interested to run for president to lead this crusade. We need a leader who can be our central spokesman and be the galvanizing force for all civil societies to unite. While waiting for such event, I suggest the following measures.
1. Do not join the House in asking the Supreme Court to decide on the legality of H.R. 1109. This will put in motion for the Supreme Court to act on the motion. With the recent appointees made by GMA, we should be concerned about the independence and integrity of these jurists. This bill will not become law unless the Senate has a similar measure and make appropriations for it.
2. Let the House do their deliberations. It will unmask the true reason for the urgency of this bill. The moment they approve a bill for parliamentary system and abolish the presidential system, their hypocrisy and the great duplicity will be exposed. This event will the greatest betrayal by our government on our people. We then have a moral right to ask our government to resign en masse including the legislators who approve this bill. We can achieve this through civil disobedience such as non-paying of taxes since taxes are designed to pay for public services such as law and order, basic education, adequate health care and preservation of peace and not fill the pockets of our officials who lost the right to represent our people.
3. Continue our protests through demonstrations, letters to the editor, texts, blogs, radio calls and use of the social media such as Facebook and Twitter.
We need to always remember: “The Price of Freedom is Sustained Vigilance."
