Warp 9!

Inspired by the 1960s science fiction classic TV series Star Trek that popularized the notion of "warp drive technology" -the theoretically fastest speed that an intergalactic traveler could go, this E-zine column tackles the various aspects of Philippine reality in a constantly changing world -a world replete with hope, but scarred by a lot of aberrations. And aberations here are predisposed to refer to products of the human mind.

We came from the sea, and the sea beckons. But…

Yes, science tells us of the grand story that humans came from the seas.  The long and winding story-theory that is evolution tells us of the magnificent adventure of our species from our simple, primordial beginnings in the heart of the earth’s seas and oceans.   On the other hand, history and social science tells us of how our nation was formed through waves of migration that came across vast bodies of water and through colonization of our peoples whose early communities were mostly concentrated in our rivers—the veins and arteries of our national life especially in that not-so-distant past.

Some may say that nationalism is passé.  But look closely now at these two brewing international issues which directly involves our country.

With the interpretation that rocket launch tests of North Korea (Nokor) are not meant to send out satellites as part of its space program but are actually efforts to develop inter-continental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) that could threaten other countries, we may now see how very real national sentiments and capabilities can be.

A Riddle for March

Allow me to share this story and to pose a riddle: “A young boy and his father are in a car accident.  The father dies at the scene. The boy is transported to the hospital, taken immediately into surgery… but the surgeon steps out of the operating room and says, ‘I can't operate on this boy — he is my son!"

A Bagong Bayani in Congress?

Tags: Warp 9!

What if one night, on one supposedly jovial Christmas eve, you get word that your father, whom you recently talked with over the phone and loved so much but barely knew as you grew up for he has been a migrant worker for years, died of heart failure in the Middle East?

What if, as your family works on the requirements to bring home his body, you learn that he has yet to pay some fee with OWWA on his last year of being abroad hence he cannot claim certain benefits from said institution despite his over a decade of being a diligent OWWA fund contributor?
