Peace in Mindanao is long overdue
Both President Rodgrigo Duterte (PRRD) and former President Benigno Aquino III (BSA III) have signified their vision to achieve a lasting peace in Mindanao. The Bangsamoro Basic Law, which is a key component of the peace deal signed by the Government of the Republic of the Philippines and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), aims at creating a new Muslim autonomous region in Mindanao. However, despite BSA III's promise to pass the bill, he was unable to gather enough support from the 16th Congress, leaving the proposed Bangsamoro territory unrealized.
PRRD, on the other hand, certified the bill as urgent and even prodded the Congress to act on it immediately, noting that peace and the end terrorism in Mindanao was long overdue. With the optimism that the 17th Congress will be supportive of the priority of PRRD, stakeholders are eyeing that the proposed law is slowly reaching the final steps.
