We Rise and Fight as One to Overcome COVID-19

Former Philippine President and Chair Emeritus of the Association for Philippines China Understanding (APCU) Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo released a statement on overcoming Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) as the country grapples with a rising case count.

Former Philippine President and Association for Philippines China Understanding (APCU) Chair Emeritus-Gloria M. Arroyo released a statement on overcoming Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) as the country grapples with the rising number of cases in Metro Manila and across the archipelago.

“Our human community is facing a global pandemic unprecedented in destructive impact to public health, economies and social fabric since World War II. The escalating plight of millions around the world is haunting. Yes, the deadly virus is daunting.” Arroyo said.

Over the past weeks, GMA expressed her support for China's efforts to combat the infectious disease. The Chinese Embassy of the Philippines and its partner organizations have provided the Philippine government with 2,000 rapid test kits, while the Federation of Filipino Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Inc. as well as other Fil-Chi communities have committed to donate P100 million worth of medical supplies to DOH aiding frontliners.

“Amid inadequate facilities and at great risk to their well-being, health workers are doing the front liner’s heroic task of attending to the rapidly increasing number of infected patients. Governments have come up with radical measures like travel quarantine and lock downs to contain the contagion.” Arroyo added.

It was reported that four major private hospitals in Metro Manila such as St. Luke’s Medical Center in Quezon City and Taguig City, Makati Medical Center, and The Medical City in Pasig City announced that they are unable to attend to more COVID-19 cases with several patients still under their care as of Tuesday, March 24.

As a reminder to everyone, GMA addressed that, “At this critical time of struggle against the pandemic, solidarity is indispensable. We can only allow finger-pointing and fault-finding at our own peril. Blaming China for one as the alleged culprit in this viral outbreak has been rejected as stigmatizing and counterproductive action by the World Health Organization. This virus does not respect national borders and will affect every country.”

GMA ended her statement saying that, “We rise and fight as one to overcome this health emergency.”
