MANILA — PUBLiCUS Asia, Inc. is moving forward with its mission of providing accurate and timely public opinion data amid the unique challenges of life under COVID-19 quarantine by launching the country’s first major national online panel survey this month — PAHAYAG SONA.

PAHAYAG SONA is the ninth iteration of PAHAYAG, the flagship independent and non-commissioned survey brand of PUBLiCUS established in 2017.

Known for generating illuminating regional political and psychographic insights—most recently during the November 2019 PAHAYAG VisMin survey focusing exclusively on the opinions of Visayans and Mindanaoans—PAHAYAG goes national for the second time this July 2020 to gauge the political perceptions and sentiments of registered voters across the country on key leaders, prominent institutions, and pressing national issues such as the government’s response to COVID19.

Mr. Aureli C. Sinsuat, Executive Director of PUBLiCUS, explained that the significant health risks posed by conducting traditional face-to-face surveys during a pandemic have provided forward-looking firms with an opportunity to fast-forward the development of the Philippine polling industry.

"The online panel method allows surveys to be conducted through a secure digital process without any need for physical contact between respondents and field personnel, unlike traditional face-to-face surveys. Essentially, online panels empower data and research firms to uncover powerful public opinion insights without creating any further risk for COVID-19 exposure," Sinsuat explained.

“The face-to-face survey has long been replaced by the online panel survey as the go-to tool for public opinion research in the United States and other sophisticated polling jurisdictions,” Sinsuat added, pointing to the American Trends Panel of Pew Research Center and the RAND American Life Panel as two prominent examples. "It's about time for the Philippines to catch up with the rest of the world."

The panels of respondents participating in PAHAYAG SONA and all other online panel surveys conducted by PUBLiCUS since 2017, including the three runs of the much-publicized NCR COVID-19 Survey recently completed between April and May 2020, are provided by Lightspeed GMI Singapore Pte. Ltd., Profiles Division of Kantar (“Kantar”). Kantar is a leading firm in the global data industry with a panel reach of 88 million respondents in 90 markets worldwide.

“PUBLiCUS is confident that online panel surveys, which are well-regarded in the United States for their convenience, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness, will soon become the preferred survey method for political and corporate clients in the Philippines as the local polling industry begins to catch up with international standards,” Sinsuat said.
